and Core to Core Program, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science

Aim of the Symposium

(1) To review recent outstanding progress in the field of glycobiology, especially glycobiology related to diseases, immune disorders, and infection, (2) To provide opportunities for international communication to students and young researchers, (3) To inspire and to stimulate the attendants to excel in their future studies in pathology, biology and the pharmaceutical sciences.

Professor Tatsuro Irimura, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, The University of Tokyo, has been enthusiastically involved in the research field of cancer, immunology and glycobiology and has demonstrated tireless efforts in order to bring up young researchers in an atmosphere of international crossover communication via The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan and the Global COE (Center of Excellence) Program of the University of Tokyo. The symposium is held also as a tribute on the occasion of his retirement.

Session 1 “Immune Disorders / Immunotherapy” reviews how carbohydrates and related molecules expressed on immune cells determine cellular interactions, cell identity and pathological phenotypes. The session provides a good inspiration on how to find novel therapeutic cues for immune related syndromes.

Session 2 “Cancer Biology / Functional Glycomics” reviews past and present oncology research as collaborative efforts in basic and clinical sciences and provides an outlook on the contribution of the pharmaceutical sciences.

Session 3 “Infectious Diseases / Dystroglycanopathies” reviews how mucins and other glycoconjugates expressed on microorganisms, viruses, and their host target epithelium regulate cellular interactions in the event of an infection. The session should inspire fruitful discussions on how to develop novel anti-infectious therapies.
